CENTRE FOR TECHNICAL CULTURE
AND HERMOUPOLIS INDUSTRIAL MUSEUM, SYROS ISL.

The study is devoted to the restoration of the Kornilakis Tannery at Hermoupolis on Syros, and its reuse as Industrial Museum of Hermoupolis.
The complex consists of five main buildings (A, B, C, D and E) of differing form, age and size. Buildings A, D and E have already been restored and will house part of the permanent display, the museum shop and the refreshment room respectively. Building B will house the events room and part of the permanent display, and building C the offices.
The two-storey building B lies at the centre of the plot. To restore communications between the floors it is proposed to construct a new staircase and elevator on the north side of the building. This will link the various levels and end at two levels on the upper storey: the level of the display, and higher up at the events room. The new means of vertical movement is a modern metal structure that makes the present intervention in the building apparent.
The rest of the building is to be restored to its original form: the floors, flat roofs and roofs are to be reconstructed, and the masonry and arcades reinforced so as to meet the modern functional requirements of the museum.
