THREE HOUSES IN PLAKA, ATHENS

Restoration of three separate small buildings in Plaka and remodelling of them into a unit of two residences.
The entirely heterogeneous character of the individual buildings, examples of differing periods, is retained unaltered. The eclecticist building is fully restored, the single storey building acquires the addition of a new floor, recessed from the building line, and the ‘vernacular’ house retains its neo-Classical facade. The addition is marked by its clean-cut geometry, contrasting architectural style and functional simplicity. A clear typological reference to the ‘traditional’ model of a residence in old Athens, in which all the rooms of the house communicate with one another by means of a shared courtyard, has been sought.
The functional linkage of the two related houses is achieved by means of an open corridor / passage.
