HOUSE IN VYZITSA,
MOUNT PELION

The design involves the building of a new residence to respond to the requirements of the modern way of life. The house is located at a group of residences consists of two free-standing buildings, constructed at different periods: the traditional Tsardinis mansion, built in the Pelion style in 1779 and the single-space ‘Rakias’ ‘auxiliary house’.
The harmonious integration of the new residence into the traditional environment of Vyzitsa is done without imitation. The building borrows features from the traditional typology and materials of the locality, enhancing them with new factors. For example, mixed materials (stone - concrete - brick) are used for the construction of the walls; these ensure the rigidity and anti-seismic properties of the building. The first floor was constructed with a composite timber frame, as a modern version of the traditional wooden constructions of the area. The new residence is composed of purely geometrical patterns, re-inscribes traditional forms, and proposes new features with respect for the scale, the magnitude and the colours of the traditional settlement.
