RESTORATION AND EXTENSION
OF A LISTED BUILDING IN ATHENS

at 89 Ippokratous
& 7 Methonis Str

The design, which was approved by a special regulation of the Ministry of the Environment, Spatial Planning and Public Works (Official Journal of the Hellenic Republic 151/Δ/27.2.2002), proposes the restoration of the scheduled neo-Classical building and the addition of new floors in a contemporary architectural style to house office premises. The greater part of the old building is renovated, reinforced and adapted to the needs of the modern use.
It is entered, as in the past, from the yard gate, after the removal of a later inter-War addition. The new, ‘rugged’ construction is developed in the background, behind the neo-Classical building and ‘accompanies’ it, forming the neutral background which stresses its uniqueness, at the same time hiding the tasteless internal elevations of the surrounding apartment blocks.
