COOPERATIVE BANK OF TRIKALA

3rd prize
in architectural
competition

The major importance of the architecture and emblematic presence of the Head Office and Administration Building of the Co-operative Bank
in the capital of the prefecture were the criterion
for the design of this proposal.
At the same time, a dialogue was sought between the building and the city’s architectural tradition. The solid base of the new building, the horizontal joint which divides the building mass, and the differentiation of the superstructure in a lighter
and perforated style, which makes a reference to the ‘oriels’ and projections of the earlier urban architecture of Thessaly (and elsewhere), together with the relevant turn of the successive building masses depending upon the orientation of the view or the building line are all reminiscent of features of the traditional architecture of the city, though they distance themselves from any tendency to imitate it.
The proposal elaborates the geometrical correlations of the individual functional units with three basic materials on its ‘skin’: concrete, a facing of marble, glass. Lighting louvres inscribed between them which protect the workplaces from the sun, but also lend lightness and individual character.
At night, the semi-open-air zones behind the louvres are lit and register in the memory of passers-by a clear picture which is associated with the emblematic presence of the Bank in its city.
By day, the superstructure crowns and protects
the entrance to the bank branch premises, which recede, leaving a public space before it which can
be appropriated and is welcoming.
