NEW USE OF THE FORMER TSALAPATAS FACTORY
VOLOS

The Tsalapatas brick and tile works at Volos was built in 1925. It operated for 50 years, as one of the best known factories in the area. The plant was preserved in good condition, and as an important example of a surviving industrial complex of its kind, it has been scheduled for preservation.

The present design was drawn up following an invitation to tender from the Municipality of Volos for the selection of contractors for the development and operation of a centre for the cultural heritage and contemporary artistic creation, centring on an industrial museum. The new intervention re-determines the uses and restores the authentic industrial atmosphere. Thus the design is for a strong pole of attraction based on the rich tradition of Volos, aimed at drawing the attention of both residents and visitors.

The design proposes reconstructions of sections of the indented walls of the old drying-sheds, in order to stress that these spaces resulted from the rupture of a dense structure, typical of the original use.

The grid of the pre-war threshing-floor area is to be preserved, and an area for outdoor events is to be organised in the grid of the pre-war rail tracks.the holding of occasional outdoor events under light tent-structures respects the characteristic industrial landscape.
