OLD STOCK MARKET HOUSE IN ATHENS

The main principles followed in the study for the restoration of the stock exchange building were the reversibility of the interventions; respect for and conservation of the authentic material, as far as possible; preservation of the structural system of the building; the use of a modern architectural expression for the new features to be integrated; and the preservation of the traces of the interventions, without this destroying the unity of the monument or downgrading its artistic value.

The methodology of the interventions followed the restoration principles applied to listed historical buildings. In the roof, the authentic bearing member was retained, repaired, strengthened and linked with the masonry by a beam, so that it could continue to play its original role in the statics. In the case of the masonry, it was proposed to reinforce it by injections and reinforced plaster on the exterior, where the state of the plaster was such that it cold not be preserved. On the interior, it was proposed to clean, consolidate and supplement the decoration in places, in order to restore completely the original quality of the space. In the case of the outer rooms of the annexes and in the open courtyard, it was proposed to restore them by incorporating architectural elements with a modern design.
