RESTORATION OF THE BURNT NTUA
RECTORATE BUILDING, ATHENS

Stournari
& Patission Street
Athens

The historic National Technical University of Athens Administration building is one of the most important 19th-century monumental complexes in the centre of Athens, and an internationally recognised structure by the architect Lysandros Kaftantzoglou (1861-1876).
Its restoration was judged to be necessary after the fire of 25 October 1991, when a large part of the roof, the ceilings and the marble members of the entablature were completely destroyed, leaving essentially only the bearing structure on the ground floor. The most crucial project was the conservation of the marble decoration of the roof, which, in addition to the fire damage, had suffered structural deterioration as a result of the swelling and rusting of the steel clamps in the supports for the members of the cornice.
The basic principles governing the restoration of the building are as follows.
- its morphological restoration, involving the complete, faithful reproduction of the original design.
- in the restoration, account will be taken of the requirements of the future use of the building.
- the way in which the structure will be restored from a technical point of view will guarantee its long life and appropriate reaction to extreme conditions.
The restoration of the building includes the complete reconstruction of the ground floor (floors, ceilings, roof, door- and window-frames, marble elements), apart from the bearing walls and the exterior plaster. The restoration of the cornice involves taking down all its members, removing all the steel clamps, and reassembling it on a new beam made of reinforced concrete, which crowns the walls.
