O.T.E BUILDING, ATHENS

The listed building, designed by the famous architect Anastasios Metaxas was built around 1930. Five years later, Metaxas probably modified his building by adding two extra floors and redesigning the facades.
The design aims to provide large, uniform and fexible spaces, able to accommodate new functions (offices, shops, restaurants) set by the changing spatial conditions in Athens and the development of commercial activities combined with the increasing values of land, in the city centre.
The existing main bearing structure of the building is maintained, repaired and reinforced.
The two existing staircases are maintained and the vertical circulation is facilitated dy three new lifts. Escalators are located into a new slot, between the array of the existing columns. The slot ends at the roof, forming an impressive skylight.
External interventions aim to restore the original facades, as well as to ameliorate the relationship of the building with its surrounding urban public space.
