RESTORATION OF THE BYZANTINE CHURCH
"AGHII APOSTOLI", LEONTARI, ARKADIA

Bυζαντινός ναός
Αγίων Αποστόλων
Λιοντάρι Aρκαδίας

After an exhaustive study of the church and the identification of its problems, it became clear that there was an urgent need to consolidate, conserve and restore the monument, the main thrust being to achieve the following objectives:
a. restoration of damage to the building.
b. structural reinforcement of the bearing structure.
c. enhancement of the archaeological and architectural value of all the notable phases of the monument.
d. improvement of the readability of the original architectural composition and of the later building history of the church.
e. functional use of the church as a place of worship and at the same time as an archaeological monument open to the public
f. implementation of the principles of the Charter of Venice:
academic authority of the restoration work, respect for the historical phases, the obliteration, exceptionally, of insignificant additions in order to display works of high artistic, aesthetic or archaeological value, display of the decoration in its original position, use of consistent materials, distinction of new structures, disposition of excavations and conservation of finds, documentation and publication.
In addition to the work of restoration and the dismantling of later additions, it is proposed to built a new bell-tower at a distance from the monument, in the base of which will be housed the modern electrical and technical installations.
